Business at Kisoro Municipal Council offices came to a standstill after truck drivers blocked the main gate in protest over a disputed transport tax collection contract.

Members of the Kisoro Transporters Association parked their trucks at the entrance, accusing the municipal council of awarding the contract to an outsider they said was not part of their group.

The drivers said the individual who secured the contract had not applied through their association and was unknown to them, despite the group having handled transport tax collection for the municipality since 2017.

"We will not pay taxes to a person we don’t know. He has no truck and is not one of us," the drivers said.

Association chairperson Ntamuheza Sipiriyano said the decision to sideline the group had no justification, arguing that they had a proven track record in revenue collection.

Following a meeting with Town Clerk Richard Mugisha, the protest was called off after the council agreed to allow the association to continue collecting the revenue.

Mugisha commended the drivers for expressing their grievances peacefully, while Ntamuheza welcomed the resolution and thanked members for maintaining unity during the standoff.
